Baker Four Square

Baker Four Square

This historic four square had been victim to a few remodels over its life, and my clients’ deepest wish was to make their home feel cohesive. We all loved the layout and flow of this home and treasured the moments of original historic fabric it still had, so we decided to lean into the home’s assets and carry them through out their remodel.

Kitchen

This little kitchen wasn’t functioning at its best and quickly became the biggest undertaking of this remodel. The original brick wall had not fared well over the years, and was in need of some serious structural help, so rebuilding the back of the house became the first order of business, but this let us increase the size of the windows and flood the kitchen with all that gorgeous northern light. I reimagined the layout of the kitchen to bring in some much needed functionality and was even able to tuck in a beverage center. Aesthetically, we wanted the kitchen to feel bright and open, even as we utilized every square inch of storage we could get, so we selected a crisp light blue for the walls, white cabinets, and white tile for the backsplash. But we were dead set against this kitchen becoming a space that didn’t drip with charm, so we brought in handmade star and cross tiles on the backsplash (with a little pop to the beverage area tile with a hand painted design), a marble look quartz countertop, and touches of black and brass for a little glitz. We also carried the wood flooring from the rest of the home into the kitchen and designed a custom steel and wood island to bring warmth into this space. The laundry room & pantry were also updated to include lovely built-in storage and tie in with the finishes in the kitchen.

Dining Room

This room was suffering from some major inconsistencies, so we reframed all of the doorways to make them the same height, added custom wood paneling under the chair rail, and utilized the same paint color we brought into the living room to help those two spaces communicate. The dining room now feels like it has always been just as it is, a seamless centerpiece in this home.

Living Room

The custom fireplace in this room is the real showstopper. I was able to marry a contemporary gas fireplace insert with an antique coal fireplace cover to give this fireplace function and charm. We designed a custom fireplace surround to coordinate with the woodwork in the dining room and utilized a variety of handmade tile sizes and finishes to create a fireplace that feels like it has always been a part of this home. To give this room a bit more natural light we also added a custom window with a lovely diamond pattern.

Bathroom

This little bathroom was also in need of an update. We had a custom door made to match the existing doors in the home and added porcelain doorknobs that feel right at home. We added a pattern tile to the floor for a little interest but kept the rest of the finishes simple with off whites and deep blues that harmonize nicely in the space.
